The reports did not resemble one another closely enough to be gathered under a common heading.

At an observatory beneath a pale northern sky, the aurora appeared forty-three minutes before local dawn, spreading in green and crimson bands where no such display had been predicted. The staff watched from the outer platform until the cold drove most of them back inside. Their instruments recorded an elevated particle flux, a magnetic disturbance beyond the forecast range, and eleven seconds during which three timing references failed to agree. None of the values exceeded the tolerances built into the station. The observation was classified, archived, and forwarded through the usual channels before the morning shift arrived.

Nearly six hundred light-years away, a commercial harbor suspended departures while its orbital-weather systems reviewed an advisory they had already cleared once. The delay was brief enough to produce irritation rather than concern. Passengers drifted toward the concourse windows, where the upper atmosphere shone with an unfamiliar color, and a child asked one of the harbor stewards whether the sky had always looked that way. By the time the steward found an answer gentle enough to offer, the advisory had cleared. Traffic resumed. Three ships departed at their assigned marks. A fourth left thirty-one seconds late, and the discrepancy entered the record with everything else.

A survey vessel farther along the network saw no aurora at all. Its navigator had been checking position against a familiar pulsar when the manual solution placed the star where the autonomous solution insisted it could not be. The disagreement persisted for less than two seconds. When the navigator repeated the observation, both systems returned the expected result. The captain ordered the original readings preserved, not because she believed them significant, but because the cost of keeping a record was lower than the cost of later wishing they had.

Elsewhere, children gathered for the ordinary work of becoming people among other people. Information no longer required a classroom, and had not for generations, but childhood still required company. They played, argued, formed alliances, abandoned them, apologized badly, laughed at the wrong moments, and learned that the world contained minds other than their own. Their teachers watched for the small failures from which larger failures sometimes grew and intervened only when intervention was useful. Nothing unusual occurred.

Across inhabited space, maintainers began their rounds. Harbor stewards checked manifests. Gardeners disputed irrigation allotments. Musicians tuned instruments against local standards that had never given them reason for doubt. Doctors opened their morning lists. Someone misplaced a tool and blamed the last shift. Someone decided to resign. Someone else changed their mind before saying so.

The observations entered separate archives under separate jurisdictions, surrounded by millions of records that appeared more urgent and were easier to understand. Each described something real. None described enough.

By the time anyone thought to compare them, the first disagreement was already part of history.
