Introduction
The First Fracture is the first long-form work from a much larger project.
The world around it did not begin with a plan for a novel. It accumulated. A ship suggested an institution. An institution required a history. A phrase became a principle, a principle acquired consequences, and eventually the distance between one imagined future and another became a history of its own.
What emerged was the Bridge Universe: a setting concerned, in one way or another, with continuity—what people preserve, what they lose, what they misunderstand, and what they build when the systems they trusted are no longer enough.
The First Fracture is one story within a much larger constructed history. The records, ledgers, and underlying architecture of that history are being preserved not only so that its origins can be examined, but so that others may one day create within it. This is not intended to be the only story the Bridge Universe can tell.
This novel goes back toward the beginning.
Not the beginning of everything. There is rarely such a thing. It begins with ordinary people living ordinary lives in a civilization that has every reason to believe tomorrow will arrive much as expected.
The larger history can wait.
They were not trying to become history.
They were trying to get through the day.

The work opens with a Prologue and closes with two appendices: Appendix A — Character Plates and Appendix B — Authorship, AI Assistance, and Provenance.

Acknowledgments
This work owes an intellectual debt to Carl Sagan and Richard Feynman: to Sagan for the insistence that wonder and skepticism need not be opposites, and to Feynman for the harder obligation to test what we think we know against what is actually there.
Neither supplied the answers pursued here. They helped establish the habit of asking whether the answers deserve to survive examination.
